Jeffrey Rothstein

Jeffrey Rothstein is currently a Professor of Neurology at Johns Hopkins Medicine and holds the position of Director of the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research. His academic journey began with a masters degree in neurochemistry from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics from the University of Illinois Health Sciences Center. Following this, he achieved his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, and completed his residency in neurology and a fellowship in neuromuscular disease at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Rothstein's areas of expertise include Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Lou Gehrig's Disease, Neurology, and Neuromuscular Disease.

Throughout his prominent career, Rothstein has been deeply involved in research focused on various molecular mechanisms of selective neurodegeneration in motor neuron diseases, notably ALS. He has worked on identifying novel drug or peptide therapeutics to delay or prevent motor neuron degeneration in ALS, a testament to his commitment towards advancements in the field. Additionally, he has made significant strides in the use of neuronal and non-neuronal stem cell therapies to treat motor neuron diseases, and conducted research on motor axon regeneration and the basic biology of glutamate transporters.

Rothstein has further enriched his profile by serving as the principal and-or local investigator in eight national or international trials in ALS. His academic contributions also include authoring over 100 articles on basic and clinical neuroscience, underscoring his dedication to expanding the body of knowledge in his field. He is affiliated with the Neurology - Neuromuscular Medicine department, and has been involved in the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Clinic, Brain Science Institute, Muscular Dystrophy Association Center, and Robert Packard Center for ALS Research.
