My name is Jenny Darroch and while I have been speaking to make a living since 1992, I would now like to take my speaking career to the next level by working with speaker bureaus to access to a wider range of fee paying speaking events around the world.

This year, I published my first book Marketing through Turbulent Times with Palgrave Macmillan and I have spent the first part of the year marketing it. I have managed to book 1-2 speaking events a month – the highlight was an all expenses paid trip to Beijing where I gave a keynote address to the Global Leadership Conference. These speaking opportunities have given me the chance to refine my talk and fine-tune my approach to different audiences, and learn from other seasoned speakers.

Public speaking isn’t that difficult for me as I am a marketing professor and so I make a living by talking. I work at the Drucker School of Management in Claremont, California. What sets the Drucker School apart from other business schools is that we teach only graduate students – the average age of our Executive MBA class is 43 and the average age of our MBA class is 28. We also do executive education programs and recent clients include Fujitsu, the Panda Restaurant Group and Pulmone. Our “students” can be tough audiences but we pride ourselves in what we do and were recently ranked by the Princeton Review as #5 in the nation for the quality of faculty.

My expectation is that I should be able to earn $5,000 - $10,000 plus expenses per national speaking engagement, less than $5,000 plus expenses for a local speaking engagement and $10,000 - $20,000 plus expenses for an international engagement. I am happy to take your advice on this. As far as travel requirements are concerned, I do not want to be out of pocket and so expect ground transport to and from airports, accommodation and airfares to be covered.

I am willing to give as many speeches as I can to allow me to increase the income I generate per speaking engagement. While I do have a “day job”, I have a lot of flexibility as I do no teach every day of the week and I am free in December and from May – August. My personal goal for the next five years is to generate income from speaking that at least equals my income as a professor so that I might make different choices in the future.
