Jessica Coon Biography
Jessica Coon is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in the Department of Linguistics at McGill University. Her research focuses on variation across human languages, with a special focus on Indigenous languages of the Americas. Her expertise in linguistic fieldwork and language universals led to her role as the linguistics consultant for the 2016 sci-fi film "Arrival," which grapples with the possible effects of language on thought.
In addition to research into the range and limits of cross-linguistic variation, Coon has worked to support community-led language documentation and revitalization efforts to highlight that language rights are human rights, as well as to bring visibility to the importance and value of global language diversity through public lectures to diverse audiences, ranging from high schools to tech industry professionals via a 2024 TED talk.
Coon received her BA in Linguistics and Anthropology from Reed College and her PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
