Skeleton racing involves participants racing face-first on a sled similar to a luge, descending a track akin to those used in bobsledding at considerable speeds.

A unique aspect of his career is his heritage as a third-generation Olympian—the only American to hold this distinction. His father, Jim Shea, competed in Nordic combined and cross-country skiing at the 1964 Olympics, and his grandfather, Jack Shea, secured two gold medals in speed skating at the 1932 Olympics. Tragically, his grandfather passed away in an automobile accident just 17 days before the Salt Lake City Winter Games. Carrying a photo of his grandfather in his helmet, Shea crossed the finish line at these games, securing his gold medal in a poignant tribute.
