Joanne Martin

Joanne Martin is the former Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) of IBM and currently serves as the President of JLM Consulting, LLC. She has also taken on the role of CISO-in-Residence at Vicinage, LLC, offering 'CISO as a Service' expertise to Vicinage clients. With more than 30 years of experience in technical and business roles at IBM, her career peaked as IBM’s CISO and Vice President for IT Risk. In this capacity, she defined and maintained the vision, strategy, and programs that safeguarded IBM’s information assets, developed policy and processes to mitigate IT risks globally, managed and responded to incidents, established standards, and oversaw the implementation of technology to support the enterprise security mission.

Martin is recognized for her leadership in technology and people development, making her a sought-after speaker and advisor to senior executives. Her ability to understand the business benefits of emerging technology and effectively communicate them to diverse audiences has consistently been a highlight of her career. Martin's technical leadership in high-performance computing and online commerce earned her the title of IBM Distinguished Engineer in 2004. Her executive roles have covered a variety of areas, including Application and Infrastructure Services, IBM’s Technical Strategy, and global IBM technical community development, along with Security and Risk management.

Apart from her corporate achievements, Martin has been an influential figure in broader technology and security communities. She is on the National Advisory Board of the CISO Coalition and was a founding member of the Security 50. Her contributions to the field have been acknowledged through various accolades, including being named one of the 25 most influential working mothers by Working Mother magazine in 1998 and her election to the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame in 2012. Martin earned her PhD in Mathematics from The Johns Hopkins University in 1981, further underscoring her deep-rooted expertise in her field.
