Joe Manchin

Senator Joe Manchin is a prominent figure in American politics, known for his centrist views and pivotal role in the U.S. Senate, where he represented the state of West Virginia from 2010 to 2025 and served as Chairman of the US Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.

Sen. Manchin hails from a family with a rich history in local politics: his father and grandfather both served as mayors of Farmington, West Virginia. He graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in business administration. Before venturing into politics, he worked in the family business as president of a coal brokerage company, Enersystems.

Sen. Manchin's political career began in the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1982, followed by a stint in the State Senate. In 2000, he was elected as the state's Secretary of State. Manchin's ascent continued when he was elected Governor of West Virginia in 2005, a position he held until 2010. As governor, he focused on economic development, education, and healthcare reform. His pragmatic approach and willingness to work across party lines earned him broad support in a state that has traditionally swung between Democratic and Republican leadership.

In 2010, Sen. Manchin was elected to the U.S. Senate, succeeding Robert Byrd. Known for his moderate stance, he often finds himself at the center of legislative negotiations.
