Joe Torre has a distinguished career in baseball, both as a player and a manager. He earned the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1971 and was named the National League Player of the Month twice. His contribution to the sport extends beyond his playing career, serving as the player-manager of the New York Mets in 1977, one of the few player-managers of his time. After retiring as a player, Torre transitioned to a full-time managerial role, leading the New York Yankees from 1996 to 2007 to four World Series titles and making the playoffs every season during his tenure.
Following his success with the Yankees, Torre took on the role of manager for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2008 to 2010, leading them to their first postseason series victory since 1988 and two National League Championship Series appearances. His achievements aren't limited to the field; he also co-authored a book titled "The Yankee Years" with Tom Verducci. Torre has continued his involvement with Major League Baseball as the Executive Vice President for Baseball Operations since February 2011, a role in which he oversees Major League operations, on-field operations, on-field discipline, and umpiring.
Torre has a strong commitment to addressing domestic violence, establishing the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation in 2002. The Foundation’s mission is to develop educational programs that will end the cycle of domestic violence and save lives. Since its inception, the Foundation has educated thousands of students, parents, teachers, and school faculty about the devastating effects of domestic violence. Torre is the co-author of three books: "The Yankee Years," "Chasing the Dream: My Lifelong Journey to the World Series," and "Joe Torre’s Ground Rules for Winners: 12 Keys to Managing Team Players, Tough Bosses, Setbacks, and Success." Additionally, he has been recognized for his managerial prowess with multiple awards, including AP Manager of the Year in 1982 and 1998, and he ranks fifth in all-time managerial wins with 2,326. In 2014, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame and the New York Yankees retired his number, 6, honoring his significant contributions to the team and the sport.
