John Paul DeJoria

John Paul DeJoria overcame significant early life challenges to become a billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is recognized as the co-founder of the global haircare brand John Paul Mitchell Systems and the premium tequila brand Patrón. DeJoria learned resilience and developed a strong work ethic during his early career as a door-to-door salesman, setting the foundation for his later success.

In 1980, DeJoria and hairstylist Paul Mitchell launched John Paul Mitchell Systems with a modest $700 in startup capital. They quickly gained a significant presence in the beauty industry with their innovative line of high-quality hair products and unique business model centered on professional stylists. A cornerstone of the brand is DeJoria's commitment to eco-friendly practices and cruelty-free testing, making John Paul Mitchell Systems a pioneer in sustainable beauty. To date, it remains a leading global brand with widespread availability in salons and stores.

DeJoria subsequently found success in the spirits market, co-founding Patrón Spirits in 1989. The brand redefined the perception of tequila in the United States and globally by positioning Patrón as a high-end, luxury product. Under DeJoria's leadership, Patrón became a household name and initiated the era of premium tequila. He sold his stake in Patrón to Bacardi in 2018, reinforcing his status as a successful entrepreneur. Later in the same year, DeJoria also co-founded ROKiT Group, launching brands such as ROKiT Phones and ROKiT Telemedicine.

DeJoria channels his success into his philanthropic pursuits, supporting various causes, including environmental sustainability, homelessness, and entrepreneurship. He is a co-creator of Grow Appalachia, promoting healthy food and farming skills since 2009, and a supporter of charitable organizations such as Mobile Loaves & Fishes, Food4Africa, Mineseeker, and Blazer House. Notably, in 2008, he collaborated with Nelson Mandela to provide food to over 17,000 orphaned children in sub-Saharan Africa through Food4Africa. The 2017 documentary "Good Fortune," which won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at Sundance, details his life, philanthropy, and journey from homelessness to billionaire status. The Captain Paul Watson Foundation honored DeJoria in 2022 by naming their first ship the 'John Paul DeJoria II' in recognition of his support for environmental causes. Additionally, he pledged £20,000 to help preserve the historic 19th-century frigate HMS Unicorn in 2022.
