John Starks

John Starks is currently in his 19th season as a member of Knicks front office after tenure as one of the most popular, tenacious, and electrifying players in team history. Starks is involved in day-to-day efforts to expand Knicks Alumni Relations, Community Relations and Fan Development programs. His all-out style stamped him as one of city’s most popular athletes during memorable eight-year Knicks career (1990-91 through 1997-98).

Starks’ accolades include NBA All-Star in 1994, All-Defensive Second Team in 1992-93, League’s Sixth Man of the Year in 1996-97. He averaged 14.1 points as a Knick and played key role on 1994 Eastern Conference Championship team. Starks is the Knicks’ all-time career leader in three-point field goals (982), 11th in total points (8,489), eighth in assists (2,394), and seventh in steals (711). He authored one of the most famous plays in team history - “The Dunk” - in final minute of NY’s win over Chicago in Game Two of 1993 Eastern Conference Finals. He averaged 12.5 points over standout 13-year NBA career with Golden State (1988-89, and 1998-99 through 1999-2000), Knicks (1990-91 through 1997-98), Chicago (1999-2000) and Utah (2000-01 through 2001-02). Starks went 1,222-3,591 (.340) in his career from three-point range and was honored as Knicks Legend representing the decade of the 1990s on Feb. 23, 2011. Starks was Inducted into Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame on Aug. 16, 2011.

In his front office position, Starks continues the longstanding tradition of community involvement established during his playing days. He is a perennial figure in Metropolitan area with myriad of youth-oriented efforts. He established The John Starks Foundation in 1994 to provide monetary grants to NY, CT, NJ and Tulsa, OK college bound students who demonstrate academic achievement, a commitment to community service and financial need. He hosts an annual celebrity golf tournament in Greenwich, CT to benefit the John Starks Foundation’s 3-Point Scholarship. For more than a decade, he oversaw John Starks Youth Basketball Camp in Purchase, NY. In 1997, Starks was the male winner of Hank Iba Citizen Athlete Award, in addition to earning “Good Guy” Award from New York Press Photographers Association.

In the business arena, Starks is a partner for revolutionary Zipway sports, medical and adaptive apparel unveiled in April 2007 (www. zipwaybrand.com) and now an official NBA licensee. He is a spokesperson and partner for www.totalbodyboard.com, a sports performance training equipment company created by 3-time Olympian Charles Austin. Starks is also a motivational speaker who has addressed some of the area’s most prestigious business firms. Starks served for two seasons (2002- 03 and 2003-04) as head coach of USBL’s Westchester Wildfire. His autobiography, “John Starks: My Life,” was released by Sports Publishing in 2004. His documentary Keep Shooting, The John Starks Story is currently being developed. Starks is an avid golfer, and he and his wife Jacqueline have three children, John Jr. Chelsea and Tiara.
