Jonathan Marvel Biography
Jonathan Marvel is an architect, urban designer, and founding principal at Marvel Architects, a solutions-driven design firm with offices in New York and Puerto Rico. Marvel also teaches at Pratt Institute’s Graduate School of Planning and Placemaking. His firm's current work includes the redevelopment of Brooklyn Navy Yard into a center for technology and entrepreneurship, the design of a large affordable housing development in Queens, and new housing in Brooklyn designed to help LGBT seniors age in place. Marvel, who was born and raised in Puerto Rico, cofounded a new nonprofit called Resilient Power Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria, bringing renewable energy and clean water to communities that were disconnected from the grid for months. Now, Marvel Architects is also working on plans for new housing in Puerto Rico designed to better survive future storms, with stronger construction, solar power, and onsite water purification.
