Joseph Ravenell

Joseph Ravenell, MD, MS, is an Assistant Professor of Population Health and Medicine at NYU School of Medicine and a core member of the Center for Healthful Behavior Change. As a board-certified internist and hypertension specialist, he carries a robust background in NIH-funded research focusing on improving cardiovascular disease in diverse populations. He is the Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI of three community-based randomized trials aimed at enhancing blood pressure control and cancer screening in African-American communities through innovative settings such as churches and barbershops. These trials include a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute R01 grant to test community-based strategies in 24 black churches in Harlem; a National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities P60 project to improve outcomes in black barbershops; and a CDC-funded U48 grant focused on increasing blood pressure control among black men in New York City.

Dr. Ravenell has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Heart Association Pharmaceutical Roundtable Career Development Award for Implementation Research. These awards support his projects on physician-level interventions for global cardiovascular risk in black men and improving hypertension management among physicians in New York City’s municipal health system, respectively. His commitment to advancing healthcare is further evidenced by his role as co-PI in an NIA-funded RC4 grant that examines a behavioral economics intervention aimed at fostering adherence to clinical lipid-lowering guidelines among physicians.

In his clinical practice, Dr. Ravenell co-founded the Bellevue Hospital Resistant Hypertension Program and established the first NYU Hypertension and Lipidology Fellowship program. These initiatives are designed to manage high-risk hypertension cases and train physicians in community-based behavioral cardiovascular research. His certifications include Specialist in Clinical Hypertension by the American Society of Hypertension, and he was elected as an inaugural Fellow of the American Society of Hypertension. Through his comprehensive research, clinical care, and training efforts, Dr. Ravenell continues to lead and innovate in the fields of cardiovascular disease management, hypertension, and population health improvement.
