Laura Landro

Ms. Landro is an assistant managing editor of The Wall Street Journal, and writes frequently about health care. Her column, “The Informed Patient,” runs on alternate Tuesdays.

Ms. Landro joined the New York bureau of the Journal in 1981 as a reporter covering the entertainment, cable and publishing industries and was named marketing and media editor in May 1991. She assumed her current position in November 2001.

Ms. Landro is the recipient of the Gerald Loeb award for deadline reporting and the New York Women in Communications, Inc. Matrix Award in the newspaper category, honoring her achievements in journalism. Her story “Dose of Prevention: Six Prescriptions to Ease Rationing in U.S. Health Care” was one of a series of seven Wall Street Journal articles awarded the 2004 prize from the National Institute for Health Care Management Research and Educational Foundation, which recognizes excellence in health-care reporting and writing on the financing and delivery of health care and impact of health-care policy. The series was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting in 2004.

Her book, Survivor: Taking Charge of Your Fight Against Cancer, an account of her fight against leukemia and bone marrow transplant, was published in October 1998 by Simon & Schuster. Ms. Landro was awarded the live achievement award from the Italian American Cancer Foundation in 1998 and in 2005 received the Colonel Joseph File Award from the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation for her support of the organization, which provides college scholarships to the children of United States Marines and Navy Corpsmen.

Ms. Landro began her journalism career with McGraw-Hill World News in London and worked as a full-time correspondent and editor for the McGraw-Hill Energy Newsletter Group before joining BusinessWeek magazine as a staff editor.

Ms. Landro received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Ohio University.
