Leland Melvin

Leland Melvin is an engineer, educator, author, former NASA astronaut and National Football Leauge (NFL) wide receiver.

Melvin served as a mission specialist on the Space Shuttle Atlantis missions "STS-122" and "STS-129." During these missions, he contributed to the delivery and installation of the Columbus Laboratory and delivered vital equipment and supplies. His efforts were crucial to the construction of the International Space Station. Melvin was named the NASA Associate Administrator for Education in October 2010, marking his dedication to the advancement of science and technological education. He co-chaired the White House's Federal Coordination in STEM Education Task Force, shaping a 5-year national STEM education plan.

In addition to his work in space, Melvin has also been featured in various television shows and documentaries. His appearances include "Top Chef," "The Dog Whisperer," "Dogs," and National Geographic's "One Strange Rock." He also served as a host for "Child Genius" for its first two seasons. These appearances, coupled with his work as a consultant for the second season of National Geographic's "Mars," underline his commitment to using media as a platform to inspire interest in science and technology.

Melvin's journey also extends to the world of literature. He has published two books, "Chasing Space: An Astronaut's Story of Grit, Grace, and Second Chances" and "Chasing Space: Young Reader's Edition." These works, along with a viral photograph of Melvin with his dogs that was used on the cover of his autobiography, "Chasing Space," serve as a testament to his personal journey.

Notably, Melvin is the first person drafted into the NFL who has also flown in space, having played professionally as a wide receiver with the Detroit Lions. His unique journey from sports to space exploration, as well as his commitment to STEM education and inclusivity in science and education, make him a valuable voice in both the scientific and educational communities.
