Roberts was awarded a life peerage in 2020, taking the title Baron Roberts of Belgravia, reflecting his contributions to the field of history and his influence on public understanding of historical events. He continues to be an influential voice in historical scholarship and public discourse.

One of his most acclaimed works is "Napoleon the Great" (published in the United States as "Napoleon: A Life"), a biography of Napoleon Bonaparte that won the Grand Prix of the Fondation Napoléon in 2014 and was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize.
