Lynsey Addario

Lynsey Addario is a photojournalist who regularly contributes to The New York Times, National Geographic, and Time Magazine. Her work often focuses on conflicts and human rights issues, especially the role of women in traditional societies. Her extensive conflict coverage includes Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Lebanon, Darfur, the Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, and, most recently, Ukraine.

Not only has Addario worked professionally since 1996, beginning her career at the Buenos Aires Herald in Argentina with no previous photographic training, but she has also been recognized multiple times for her contributions to journalism. Throughout her career, she has received numerous accolades, including the MacArthur Fellowship or 'Genius Grant' in 2009, the Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography in 2002, and the Getty Images Grant for Editorial photography for her work in Darfur in 2008. In 2015, American Photo Magazine named her as one of the five most influential photographers of the past 25 years, citing her work as a key change in global conflict views. More recently, she received the Courage in Journalism Award from the International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) in 2022 and the George Polk Award in Photojournalism in 2023.

Her commitment to documenting the world's most pressing issues has led her to focus on various urgent topics. Her recent bodies of work include an ongoing reportage on Syrian refugees around the region for The New York Times, ISIS’ push into Iraq, the civil war in South Sudan, and African and Middle Eastern migrants arriving on Sicily's shores. She has also documented the lives of Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, and Iraq and covered the maternal mortality crisis in Assam, India, and Sierra Leone. In addition to her photography, Addario has shared her experiences and insights through her memoir, "It's What I Do: A Photographer's Life of Love and War," and her first solo collection of photography, "Of Love and War," released in 2018.

Lynsey Addario graduated with Honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is fluent in English, Spanish, and Italian. She is married to journalist Paul de Bendern, and they have two children.
