Malia Ann Obama is the oldest daughter of Barack Obama, the former senator from Illinois who became president on January 20, 2009. Malia Obama was born in 1998 to Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, who were married in 1992. Malia and her younger sister Sasha attended the private University of Chicago Laboratory Schools in Chicago. Malia Obama entered the fifth grade in 2008; she and her sister began attending Sidwell Friends School in January of 2009 after her family moved to Washington, D.C. for her father's inauguration, and have continued to study there since. In 2012, her father was re-elected for a second four-year term as president. Malia Obama will be 18 years old when her father finishes his second term early in 2017.
The older First Daughter is now a full-fledged cultural icon, whose fashion choices and college visits (most recently, to Brown University) routinely make headlines. Earlier this year, for example, a leaked photo appeared to show Obama sporting a T-shirt with the logo for Brooklyn hip-hop collective Pro Era, driving record traffic to co-founder Joey Bada$$’s Wikipedia page. Malia was spotted on the set of HBO’s Girls over the summer of 2015, reportedly as part of an internship for creator Lena Dunham.
