Mariano Rivera’s journey from humble beginnings in Puerto Caimito, Panama, to baseball immortality exemplifies perseverance and greatness. Raised in a small fishing village, Rivera began playing baseball with makeshift equipment, using cardboard gloves and bats fashioned from tree branches. His natural athleticism and powerful arm caught the attention of the New York Yankees, leading to a signing as an international free agent on February 17, 1990, for a modest $3,000.

Adjusting to professional baseball in the United States wasn’t easy. Rivera encountered language barriers and early challenges, including an elbow injury that required surgery by renowned surgeon Dr. Frank Jobe. Despite his struggles and a fastball that hovered around 90 mph, Rivera persisted, eventually gaining attention as his pitch velocity climbed. He debuted as a starter in 1995 but found his true calling as a reliever the following season. His dominant performance as a set-up man for closer John Wetteland helped propel the Yankees to a World Series title that year, with Rivera finishing third in the Cy Young voting.

By 1997, Rivera became the Yankees’ full-time closer, launching a remarkable streak of 15 consecutive seasons with at least 28 saves. His mastery of the cutter—a pitch that baffled batters with its late movement—cemented his reputation as one of the greatest closers in baseball history. Rivera thrived in high-pressure situations, recording 42 postseason saves and allowing only two home runs in 141 playoff innings. His postseason brilliance contributed to five World Series championships and earned him MVP honors in both the 1999 World Series and the 2003 ALCS.

Rivera's farewell season in 2013 was filled with emotional moments, culminating in his final appearance on September 26, when teammates Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte removed him from the mound as the crowd at Yankee Stadium honored him. His career totals of 652 saves, a 2.21 ERA, and 952 games finished remain unmatched. Rivera’s achievements were recognized with his unanimous induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019, and later that year, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
