Mary Pierce

Born in Canada to an American father and a French mother, Mary Pierce is a former professional tennis player who holds citizenship of all three countries but represented France on the court. Known for her powerful groundstrokes and fierce competitive spirit, Pierce enjoyed a successful career in the 1990s and early 2000s. She turned professional in 1989 at the age of 14, quickly making her mark on the women's tour with her aggressive baseline play and impressive physical presence.

Pierce's career highlights include winning two Grand Slam singles titles. She captured her first major at the Australian Open in 1995, defeating Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in the final. Five years later, she triumphed at the French Open in 2000, a particularly memorable victory as it was on home soil at Roland Garros. In addition to her singles success, Pierce also excelled in doubles, winning the French Open in 2000 and Wimbledon in 2005, both times partnering with Martina Hingis.

Despite her on-court successes, Pierce's career was marred by injuries, several surgeries and lengthy recoveries, which ultimately led to her retirement in 2006. In 2019, she was elected to receive tennis’ ultimate honor: induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Off the court, Pierce is known for her steadfast faith in Jesus and commitment to various charitable causes. After retiring, she became involved in coaching and mentoring young players, sharing her wealth of experience and passion for the game.
