First Sergeant Matt Eversmann (Ret.) is a decorated military veteran and a hero of the infamous Black Hawk Down Battle of Mogadishu. On October 3, 1993, he led a group of Army Rangers in a critical daytime raid against a formidable enemy militia. During the mission, he and his team were besieged in a hostile district of Mogadishu, facing severe threats from an incensed local population. This dramatic episode of his career was vividly portrayed in the film "Black Hawk Down," which narrates Eversmann's harrowing ordeal.
Following his return from Somalia, Eversmann dedicated himself to educating future military leaders. He served at the Army War College and taught at The Johns Hopkins University. His commitment to service continued with a deployment to Iraq, where he spent 15 months integrated with the Iraqi Army during The Surge. Eversmann retired from active duty in May 2008, concluding a distinguished 20-year career.
In addition to his military career, Eversmann has made significant contributions as a writer and documentarian. He co-authored "The Battle of Mogadishu" and collaborated with James Patterson on "Walk in My Combat Boots" and "ER Nurses," both of which achieved immediate New York Times bestseller status. His recent documentary work includes "Send Me," a film produced for PBS, which explores advancements in battlefield medicine near Tora Bora, Afghanistan.
Today, Eversmann, alongside his wife, Tori, operates a consulting firm specializing in creating successful veteran hiring programs. They also co-host "The Veterans Nation," a weekly podcast that engages with various topics relevant to military and veteran affairs. Through his speaking engagements, he shares lessons on leadership, courage, and responsibility, drawing from his extensive experiences to inspire and educate audiences across corporate and non-profit sectors. His pragmatic insights help organizations navigate through the complexities of modern-day challenges, fostering teams equipped to manage unexpected crises effectively.
