Matt O'Neill

Matt O’Neill recently retired from the U.S. Secret Service as the Managing Director of Cyber Operations where he led the Secret Service’s global cyber investigative operations, digital forensics, mobile wireless tracking, and critical systems protection portfolio. He received his B.S. from James Madison University in 1997.

Agent O’Neill started his career with the USSS in 1998 in New Haven, CT. As a case agent, Agent O'Neill led scores of investigations focused on the world's most prolific hackers. Agent O'Neill was particularly skilled at creating personas to lure hackers from around the world into the United States to be prosecuted. Agent O'Neill developed and created the agency’s Global Investigative Operations Center (GIOC) as a centralized fusion center for agency investigative operations. Working with foreign law enforcement partners, Agent O’Neill led multinational criminal investigations involving money launderers leveraging cryptocurrency, Ransomware actors, dark web marketplaces, and Network intrusions to steal payment card data, PII, and stolen credentials. Agent O’Neill led the investigation into the successful prosecution of professional money launderers with ties to North Korea and prolific Nigerian cyber criminals.

From 2020-2022, Agent O’Neill directed the agency’s Asset Forfeiture Branch, which seized over $2B in illicit proceeds during his tenure. Agent O’Neill was the recipient of the U.S. Secret Service’s Special Agent of the Year Award, the Department of Homeland Security’s Gold and Silver Medals, and numerous other awards for his investigative and leadership efforts. Agent O'Neill retired as one of the most decorated Agents in the history of the United States Secret Service.
