Matthew Bogdanos began his career as a homicide prosecutor in the New York County District Attorney's Office in 1988 and has since become an Assistant District Attorney. In addition to his legal practice, he has served as a colonel in the Marine Reserves and pursued his passion for boxing at the middleweight level. His educational qualifications are extensive, including a degree in classics from Bucknell University, a law degree, and a master's degree in Classical Studies from Columbia University, complemented by a master's degree in Strategic Studies from the Army War College.
Following the events of 9/11, which resulted in the loss of his apartment near the World Trade Center, Bogdanos was recalled to active duty. His leadership in Afghanistan involved leading a multi-agency task force that obtained intelligence on key Taliban and al-Qaeda leaders, earning him a Bronze Star for his efforts. In Iraq, as Deputy Director, he spearheaded investigations into terrorist cells, violations of UN Security Council resolutions, and terrorist financing. His most notable contribution during this period was initiating and leading the investigation into the looting of Baghdad’s Iraq Museum, successfully recovering over 5,000 antiquities from six countries. This achievement garnered him the National Humanities Medal in 2005 from President Bush.
Bogdanos authored "Thieves of Baghdad: One Marine's Passion to Recover the World's Greatest Stolen Treasures," directing all royalties from the book towards the Museum. His work in recovering stolen antiquities has been widely recognized, including receiving a 2016 Achievement Award from the Vatican and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2011. His expertise in antiquities trafficking has led him to speak at high-profile venues such as the United Nations, Interpol, and the U.S. Congress.
Apart from his military and legal career, Bogdanos co-founded the annual charity boxing event, Battle of the Barristers, which has raised over $1.5 million for wounded veterans and children at risk. His return to the New York County District Attorney’s Office saw him continuing the pursuit of Iraq’s stolen antiquities and contributing to legal, military, and classical journals. His work and insights have been included in a collection of the greatest opening and closing arguments of the last 100 years.
A prominent educator and speaker, Bogdanos has delivered acclaimed presentations at institutions like the University of Missouri Kansas City and Louisiana State University, often incorporating a dynamic slide show featuring art works and scenes with Iraqis and soldiers. His engaging lecture style and ability to make complex topics accessible are highlighted in his talks, including "Thieves of Baghdad: The Journey to Recover the World's Greatest Stolen Treasures" and "The Leadership Life: Taking Charge of Your Mission to Lead." A movie based on his work is also currently in development, underscoring his significant contributions to both the legal and humanities fields.
