Maurice Benard

Maurice Benard began his career in the world of daytime television with notable roles in ABC soap operas. From 1987 to 1990, he charmed audiences as Nico Kelly in "All My Children." His versatility as an actor was further demonstrated in 1991 when he portrayed Desi Arnaz in the biographical television film "Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter." His most enduring role, however, began in 1993 when he took on the character of Sonny Corinthos in "General Hospital," a role he continues to play to this day.

In addition to his consistent presence on daytime television, Benard has also explored other avenues of acting. He has starred in various films such as "Joy" and "Equal Standard" and made guest appearances on TV shows like "Castle" and "A Lover Betrayed." His performances have earned him industry recognition: Benard has been nominated for ten Daytime Emmy Awards and has won three and three Soap Opera Digest Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor. He also began working with the National Mental Health Association (NMHA) on the "Bipolar Disorder: Do You Know It?" campaign to help educate Americans about the importance of recognizing the signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder. His personal experiences with the disorder have been incorporated into his portrayal of Sonny Corinthos on "General Hospital." Benard is also the author of "Nothing General About It: How Love (and Lithium) Saved Me On and Off General Hospital." His openness about his own mental health struggles and his advocacy work make him a powerful voice for those living with bipolar disorder.
