Michael Barone, born in Highland Park, Michigan, in 1944, is a distinguished Political Analyst, Journalist, and Author. He grew up in Detroit and Birmingham, Michigan, as the son of Charles Gerald Barone, a surgeon, and Alice Darcy Barone, a teacher. His educational background includes graduating magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1966 and from Yale Law School in 1969. During his college years, he was an editor for the Harvard Crimson and the Yale Law Journal. He has worked on political campaigns from 1964 to 1972 in Michigan and other states, served as a summer intern to Mayor Jerome P. Cavanagh of Detroit in 1967 and 1968, and was a law clerk to Judge Wade H. McCree, Jr., of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit from 1969 to 1971.
From 1974 to 1981, Barone was vice president of Peter D. Hart Research Associates, Inc., in Washington, a firm specializing in public opinion polling for political campaigns. He later joined the editorial page staff of The Washington Post and was a senior writer for U.S. News & World Report and a senior staff editor at Reader's Digest. Currently, he serves as Senior Political Analyst for the Washington Examiner and a Resident Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. His breadth of experience also includes contributions to Fox News Channel.
Barone is a principal co-author of "The Almanac of American Politics," a seminal series initiated in 1972, and has authored several influential books such as "Our Country: The Shaping of America from Roosevelt to Reagan," "The New Americans: How the Melting Pot Can Work Again," "Hard America, Soft America: Competition vs. Coddling and the Battle for the Nation's Future," "Our First Revolution: The Remarkable British Upheaval That Inspired America's Founding Fathers," and "Shaping Our Nation: How Surges of Migration Transformed America and Its Politics."
