Mikaela Pauline Shiffrin is an American World Cup alpine ski racer with the United States Ski Team. She is a five-time overall World Cup champion and a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist. Shifrin holds the record as the all-time winningest alpine skier with the most World Cup wins (97) of any male or female alpine skier in history. She is also the reigning Olympic and world champion in slalom, and has won the World Cup discipline title in that event seven times. Shiffrin is the youngest slalom champion in Olympic alpine skiing history, securing the title at 18 years and 345 days old.
An Olympic gold medalist, Shiffrin began turning heads almost instantly when she finished top 15 in her first two NorAm Cup races. But the heads started spinning when she won a super combined in British Colombia two weeks later, and then ski fans and coaches went cross-eyed when she landed a World Cup podium during her rookie season—at age 16. She then proceeded to amass significant achievements with a World Championship slalom gold medal and the World Cup slalom title during her sophomore year.
Shiffrin continued to dominate the skiing world by earning five more World Cup wins and giant slalom podiums in 2014, along with her second-straight slalom title. In 2015, she successfully defended her World Championship slalom title on home turf under immense pressure at Vail/Beaver Creek, and then snagged her third-straight slalom title. Despite a knee injury in the 2016 season, she made a remarkable comeback, winning all the remaining slalom races she competed in on the World Cup tour. In recognition of her influence on the sport and beyond, Shiffrin was named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World, celebrated for her dominance in skiing, her philanthropic work with organizations like Protect Our Winters, and her advocacy on mental health. She also won the Best Athlete award at the 2023 ESPYS.
In addition to her competitive success, Shiffrin has made significant appearances in public media, including a special feature on NBC's documentary "How to Raise an Olympian," and more recently on "Person to Person" with Norah O'Donnell on CBS News. Her engagements extend to influential partnerships and endorsements with brands like Atomic Skis, Oakley, and Leki, and her proactive involvement in campaigns like Proctor & Gamble’s “Thank you Mom” for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
