Missy Mazzoli

Missy Mazzoli is an American composer and pianist. Her musical journey is decorated with commendable achievements, including being among the first women to receive a commission from the Metropolitan Opera House in 2018. As a composition faculty member at the Mannes College of Music, Mazzoli has used her expertise to shape the next generation of music professionals. Her commitment to music extends beyond the classroom as she is the founder and keyboardist for Victoire, an electro-acoustic band. Her compositions have found their way to numerous audiences, with her music being published by the renowned G. Schirmer.

Mazzoli's work extends beyond composing and performing. She taught composition at Yale University in 2006 and was a guest lecturer at New York University in 2013. She also served as the executive director of the MATA Festival in New York City from 2007 to 2010. Her compositions for operas, including "SALT," "Song from the Uproar: The Lives and Deaths of Isabelle Eberhardt," "Breaking the Waves," "Proving Up," and "The Listeners," have been performed at renowned festivals and will continue to be performed in the future, with "Lincoln in the Bardo" scheduled to premiere in 2025. Her versatility as an artist is reflected in her contributions to the TV show "Mozart in the Jungle," for which she wrote and performed several songs. In 2016, she co-founded the nonprofit Luna Composition Lab to support the work of young female and non-binary composers.

Mazzoli's dedication to her craft has been recognized with numerous accolades. These include a Grammy nomination in 2018 for Best Classical Composition, a 2015 Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award, and a Fulbright Grant to the Netherlands. Moreover, she was the Mead Composer-in-Residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Bragg Artist-in-Residence at Mount Allison University. Her academic achievements in music are also impressive, having received a bachelor's degree from Boston University's College of Fine Arts, a master's degree from the Yale School of Music, and having studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.
