Misty K Snow

Misty K Snow is a Utah native who has lived her entire life in Salt Lake County and has a strong connection to the state and its people. She is part of the new millennial generation that recently surpassed the Baby Boomers as the largest voting population for in Utah and the nation.

A cashier at a grocery store and raised in a lower-income family, Snow understands the needs of working people and their families. She is concerned by the degree of income inequality in this country, particularly how it disproportionately impacts women, people of color, and the LGBT community. Snow is a progressive and self-described Bernie Sanders-like Democrat. Her policy priorities include increasing the federal minimum wage, paid maternity leave, expansion of Medicare and Medicaid, clean energy, and LGBT nondiscrimination efforts.

In 2016, Misty Snow earned the Utah Democratic Party's nomination for the U.S. Senate, making her one of the first openly transgender people in the United States to have been nominated by a major political party for a federal office. She secured the nomination by defeating fellow Democrat Jonathan Swinton in the primary. Although Swinton had initially been favored to win after securing 55% of the delegate vote at the Utah Democratic Convention to Snow's 45%, Snow steadily gained ground by aggressively campaigning throughout the state. Her nomination marked a historic moment as she became the first transgender person to earn a major-party nomination for U.S. Congress in the United States and the first LGBT person to be a major-party nominee for statewide office in Utah. However, in March 2018, Snow dropped out of the race for Utah's 2nd congressional district.
