Morgan Freeman is a prominent figure in Hollywood as an actor, director, and narrator. He has been honored with Academy Award nominations for his performances in Street Smart, Driving Miss Daisy, The Shawshank Redemption, and Invictus. He was awarded the Oscar in 2005 for Million Dollar Baby and has also received a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Freeman's breakthrough came in 1967 when he was cast in an all-African-American Broadway production of "Hello, Dolly!" starring Pearl Bailey. He gained national exposure in 1971, regularly featuring on "The Electric Company," a public television-produced children's show focused on teaching literacy skills. Despite the demanding nature of television and despite some stage work, including a Tony-nominated performance in "The Mighty Gents" in the late 1970s, Freeman sought to break into movies.
His movie career took off when he was cast as a crazed inmate in the Robert Redford film, Brubaker. After a two-year stint on the cast of the soap opera "Another World," Freeman was cast in the film Street Smart in 1987, earning him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. His critical acclaim continued with roles in Driving Miss Daisy, The Shawshank Redemption, Se7en, and Deep Impact. In 2005, Freeman won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby and reprised his role as Lucius Fox in the Batman Begins blockbuster sequels The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.
Freeman's distinctive voice has been featured in numerous films, including War of the Worlds and the Academy Award-winning documentary March of the Penguins. In addition to acting, Freeman co-founded the movie production company Revelations Entertainment, which includes its online movie distribution company, ClickStar.
Alongside his acting career, Freeman is involved in various philanthropic endeavors. He has raised money for victims of Hurricane Katrina and, through his Rock River Foundation, has donated millions to educational programs. He helped organize relief funds for hurricane victims in Grenada in 2004. Freeman also co-owns a blues club in Clarksdale, Mississippi. In 2014, he turned his ranch into a bee sanctuary as part of his environmental efforts. In June 2021, Freeman donated $1 million along with University of Mississippi Professor Linda Keena to establish the Center for Evidence-Based Policing and Reform. He has also served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959 and holds a private pilot's license.
Freeman's career continues to thrive with his most recent roles in films such as The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, Angel Has Fallen, and The Comeback Trail. He performed at the 2022 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony in Qatar and continues his narrative work by hosting the National Geographic series "The Story of God with Morgan Freeman" and "The Story of Us with Morgan Freeman."
