Muhammad Sanusi II Biography
Muhammad Sanusi II was the 14th Emir of Kano from June 2014 until he was deposed in a coup in March 2020. In a video, Sanusi accepted his deposition as a divine act and urged his supporters to remain calm and avoid violence. Sanusi is a UN Sustainable Development Goals Advocate.
During his reign as Emir, Sanusi spoke out against the government and corruption, likely leading to his deposition by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. He is also known for having called for population planning, an end to child marriage, and building more schools instead of mosques. He has also said that polygamy is contributing to poverty in the region.
Prior to ascending the throne, Sanusi was the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. For a time, Sanusi was the Chief Risk Officer and Group CEO of First Bank of Nigeria, which was then Nigeria’s largest bank. He is credited with reforming the financial sector of Nigeria and worked on attracting investments in energy and manufacturing in his capacity as chairman of the Kano State Investment Advisory Committee.
Sanusi holds degrees in economics and Islamic law. He is focused on peace, public health, girl-child education advocacy, job creation, and reforms of Muslim family law.
