Naomi Girma

Naomi Girma is a professional soccer player who plays as a center-back for San Diego Wave FC in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) and the United States national team. She was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2022 NWSL Draft and has since extended her contract with San Diego Wave FC through 2026.

Recognized for her technical ability, passing, and leadership, Girma has a successful track record representing the United States on various national teams, including the under-17, under-19, under-20, and senior teams. In 2019, while still a collegiate soccer player for the Stanford Cardinal, she captained the team to victory in the Women's College Cup. Her accolades include being named U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year in 2020 and U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year in 2023.

Praised as one of the best center backs in the world, Girma's accomplishments include being named NWSL Defender of the Year in 2022 and 2023 and NWSL Rookie of the Year in 2022. Her performances led her to be called up to represent the US at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, as well as the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup and 2024 SheBelieves Cup.
