Nick Clooney has been a broadcaster since he was 16 years old. For most of the intervening years, his focus has been radio and television news. His career has also encompassed hosting talk shows, researching and introducing "golden era" films for American Movie Classics, lecturing about news, American history, and movies, writing a newspaper column three days a week, and authoring three books, including "The Movies That Changed Us." Clooney's passion for gathering and delivering news began as a young boy in Maysville, Kentucky, absorbing the reporting of icons like Ed Murrow and William Shirer during World War II. It was in Maysville that he began his broadcasting career, initially tasked with reading a newscast.
Over the years, Clooney has held positions as a reporter, anchor, managing editor, and news director in cities including Lexington, Cincinnati, Salt Lake City, Buffalo, and Los Angeles. He has been a speaker, master of ceremonies, moderator, or panelist at more than 3,000 events and has delivered more than 30 commencement addresses. His accolades include multiple Emmy Awards, including one for commentary and another for historical narration, and he has received three additional Emmy nominations for his work with American Movie Classics. He has been honored with an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Northern Kentucky University and inducted into the Cincinnati, Kentucky, and Ohio Journalism Halls of Fame.
In 2006, Clooney and his son George traveled to Darfur, Sudan, to film the documentary "Journey to Darfur," aimed at raising awareness and funds for the crisis in Darfur. The documentary was later released on DVD, with proceeds donated to the International Rescue Committee. Clooney has also joined the faculty at American University in Washington, D.C., serving as the American University School of Communication and Newseum Distinguished Journalist in Residence. He taught courses like Opinion Writing and "Films that Changed Us," a course inspired by his book. In his personal life, Nick is married to Nina Warren Clooney, and they have resided for over 40 years in Augusta, Kentucky, close to where Nick was born. Their family includes their children, Ada and George Clooney, the latter being a notable actor, producer, and director. Nick’s late sister, Rosemary Clooney, was a celebrated singer and actress.
