Patti LuPone

Patti LuPone is an actress and singer renowned for her work in musical theater. LuPone started her career in musical theater and quickly made her mark as a prominent Broadway performer. After graduating from Juilliard, she became a founding member of John Houseman’s The Acting Company. Her breakthrough role arrived in 1979 when she took on the character of Eva Perón in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s "Evita," a performance that garnered her the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

Throughout her career, LuPone has demonstrated her diverse skills by undertaking a plethora of challenging roles in theater, film, and television. Some of her most notable stage roles include Fantine in the original London production of "Les Misérables," Reno Sweeney in the revival of "Anything Goes," and Mrs. Lovett in the 2005 revival of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street." She has garnered much attention in the recent years for her Tony-winning performance as Rose in the 2008 revival of "Gypsy," her role in the original production of "Sunset Boulevard" at the Adelphi Theater in London in 1993, and her role as Joanne in the 2022 Broadway revival of "Company," for which she won her third Tony Award. She has also received a total of two Olivier Awards, one of which was awarded in 1985 for her performances in "The Cradle Will Rock" and "Les Misérables." At the 51st Annual Grammy Awards, LuPone won in two categories, Best Classical Album and Best Opera Recording, for "Weill: Rise And Fall Of The City Of Mahagonny."

In addition to her stage work, LuPone also had a successful career on screen, including films such as "Witness," "Driving Miss Daisy," and "Beau Is Afraid," and recurring roles on television series like "Life Goes On," "Penny Dreadful," "Pose," "American Horror Story," and "Hollywood." In 2024, LuPone appeared "Agatha All Along." She continues to perform, and co-stars in the Jen Silverman play "The Roommate" on Broadway alongside Mia Farrow.

Beyond her many awards and accolades, LuPone is known for her advocacy for artists’ rights. She has consistently spoken out about issues affecting the theater community, including fair treatment of actors and the importance of preserving the integrity of live performance. With a career spanning over five decades, LuPone continues to be a significant figure in the world of theater. In recognition of her contributions, she was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2006.
