Peter Alterman

Dr. Peter Alterman is Chief Policy Officer of SAFE-BioPharma Association with special responsibilities for overseeing Identity and Access Management policy, US and global IAM standards and product certifications. In over 33 years of federal service, he served as a Senior Advisor to the Director of the Program Office for National Strategies for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace at NIST, the Senior Advisor for Strategic Initiatives to the CIO at the National Institutes of Health, Assistant CIO for e-Authentication at the National Institutes of Health, and Chair of the U.S. Federal PKI Policy Authority. He also served as Director of Operations for the Office of Extramural Research, Office of the Director, NIH.

An unabashed policy nerd, Dr. Alterman was instrumental in developing and implementing the Federal PKI Architecture, the Federal Trust Framework Provider Approval Program, the Federal e-Authentication architecture. He chaired the US Federal PKI Policy Authority for 5+ years.

Prior to entering federal service, Dr. Alterman taught English Literature at American University, the University of Denver, the University of Colorado-Denver, Arapahoe Community College and Nassau Community College. He served in the US Army Infantry in 1968-69 and subsequently received his M.A. from Adelphi University and his Ph.D. from the University of Denver.

Peter currently serves on industry identity and access management committees and workgroups and regularly participates in Industry and International standards bodies addressing online identity and access management policy and practice. He has received numerous government and private sector awards for pioneering work in global federated identity management and is currently involved in ongoing harmonization of US and EU trust frameworks.
