Phil Simms, an American sportscaster and former football quarterback, joined CBS Sports in 1998. He contributes to "NFL Monday QB" on CBS Sports Network and is a co-host on Showtime's "Inside the NFL." In 2024, Simms announced he was leaving CBS' "The NFL Today" after 26 years. Simms has a distinguished career as an NFL analyst, providing commentary for eight Super Bowls, six for CBS, including SB 50 (2016), SB XLVII (2013), SB XLIV (2010) and SB XLI (2007), SB XXXVIII (2004) and SB XXXV (2001), and two for NBC including Super Bowl XXX (1996) and Super Bowl XXXIII (1999).
Simms served as the lead analyst for CBS’s NFL coverage for 19 seasons and spent three seasons calling "Thursday Night Football." He was a regular on Showtime/Paramount's "Inside The NFL" from 2008-2023 and co-hosts the weekly SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Radio program "Simms and the Mad Dog" during the NFL season. Apart from his football commentary, Simms has also provided analysis for weightlifting events during NBC Sports' coverage of the 1996 Olympic Summer Games and worked as a sideline reporter on "The NBA on NBC."
Before his broadcasting career, Simms played for the New York Giants for 15 seasons. During his tenure, he led the Giants to victories in two Super Bowls - XXI and XXV. His performance in Super Bowl XXI earned him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) title. Simms holds the record for the highest completion percentage (22 of 25 passes, 88%) and highest passer rating (150.9) in a Super Bowl. He was a two-time Pro Bowl participant, named to the roster in 1985 and 1993. He finished his career with 33,462 passing yards and 199 touchdowns.
Simms was born in Kentucky and was the Giants' first selection in the 1979 NFL Draft from Morehead State University. He holds several team records, including the most passes completed and attempted in one game, season, and career, the most touchdown passes throughout his career, and the most 300-yard games throughout his career. His career win percentage of .598 (95-64) is the highest for any Giants quarterback with over 50 games played. Sports Illustrated named Simms the "Most Underrated Quarterback" in NFL history.
Beyond football, Simms has appeared in a variety of media outlets. He made appearances on CBS shows like "Elementary" and "The Price Is Right," co-hosted the Miss Universe 2002 pageant, and even lent his voice as the color analyst for the popular EA Sports video game series Madden NFL 13, 14, 15, and 16. He has also written a New York Times bestselling book, "Sunday Morning Quarterback: Going Deep on the Strategies, Myths and Mayhem of Football."
Simms and his wife, Diana, have three children, including former NFL quarterbacks Chris and Matt Simms. The New York Giants retired his number 11 jersey in a halftime ceremony in 1995, and he was inducted into the Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011. Today, Simms continues to contribute to the football community, both as a broadcaster and as a mentor for quarterbacks, offering evaluations of high school, college, and professional quarterbacks to top NFL personnel directors.
