Price Fishback is the Thomas R. Brown Professor of Economics at the University of Arizona, a Fellow of the TIAA-CREF Institute, and a Research Associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research. His research area of interest is the political economy of Roosevelt’s New Deal during the 1930s, examining both the determinants of New Deal spending and loans and their impact on local economies throughout the U.S. He also works on state labor legislation during the Progressive Era, the American Economy during World War II, and changes in agriculture in response to climate, government policy and technology.
Fishback and co-author Shawn Kantor were awarded a Paul Samuelson Certificate of Excellence by the TIAA-CREF Institute for their book "A Prelude to the Welfare State: The Origins of Workers’ Compensation." They also received the Lester Prize for Outstanding Book in Labor Economics and Industrial Relations by the Industrial Relation Sections at Princeton University. Fishback's other books include: "Well Worth Saving: How the New Deal Safeguarded Homeownership"; "Government and the American Economy: A New History"; and "Soft Coal, Hard Choices: The Economic Welfare of Bituminous Coal Miners, 1890-1930."
Fishback is the Executive Director of the Economic History Association (EHA) and served as co-editor of The Journal of Economic History. The EHA has twice awarded him the Arthur Cole Prize for Best Article in the Journal of Economic History and also awarded him the Jonathan Hughes Prize for Excellence in Teaching Economic History. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the Cliometrics Society and was one of the organizers of the Cliometrics Conference. He has received funding from the National Science Foundation to pursue several projects.
Fishback received his doctorate in economics at the University of Washington after graduating from Butler University. He taught and performed research at the University of Georgia and the University of Texas before moving to the University of Arizona.
