Ramanan Laxminarayan

Ramanan Laxminarayan is the founder and director of the One Health Trust, formerly known as the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy (CDDEP), based in Washington, D.C., and holds the position of senior research scholar at Princeton University. He is also the director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Antimicrobial Resistance. Laxminarayan is an affiliate professor at the University of Washington, a senior associate at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a visiting professor at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland and at the University of Kwazulu Natal in South Africa. Additionally, he chairs the board of the Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership (GARDP), a global product development partnership created by the World Health Organization, and serves as board chair at HealthCubed, which works to improve access to healthcare and diagnostics worldwide.

Laxminarayan's research since 1995 has focused on the epidemiology of infectious diseases and the economic analysis of drug resistance, particularly antibiotic resistance as a problem of managing a shared global resource. His work includes extensive peer-reviewed research, public outreach (including a widely viewed TED talk on antibiotic resistance that has been viewed more than a million times), and direct policy engagement in eleven countries in Asia and Africa through the Global Antibiotic Resistance Partnership. He has played a central role in bringing the issue of drug resistance to the attention of global leaders and policymakers, including the United Nations General Assembly in September 2016.

Laxminarayan has served on the U.S. President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology's antimicrobial resistance working group during the Obama Administration and is currently a voting member of the U.S. Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antimicrobial Resistance. He was a key figure in warning about the potential devastation of COVID-19 in India, leading significant epidemiological studies published in "Science" and organizing critical aid during the pandemic through the "OxygenForIndia" campaign. His past roles include contributing to the Disease Control Priorities for Developing Countries, 3rd edition, and creating the Immunization Technical Support Unit which supports the immunization program in India. Laxminarayan's influence and research have been widely recognized, making him a valued voice in global health discussions, as covered by major media outlets such as Associated Press, BBC, CNN, the Economist, and NPR.
