Rashid Khalidi holds the Edward Said Chair in Arab Studies at Columbia University. He earned his B.A. from Yale University in 1970 and his D.Phil. from Oxford University in 1974. Khalidi has an extensive teaching background, having held positions at the Lebanese University, the American University of Beirut, Georgetown University, and the University of Chicago, where he served as Professor of Middle East History and Director of the Center for International Studies from 1987 to 2003. His leadership roles include past presidency of the Middle East Studies Association and current presidency of the American Committee on Jerusalem.
Khalidi has authored several impactful books such as "The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance, 1917-2017," which received the 2020 MEMO Book Award; "Brokers of Deceit: How the U.S. has Undermined Peace in the Middle East," awarded the Lionel Trilling Book Award and the MEMO Book Award; and "Sowing Crisis: American Dominance and the Cold War in the Middle East." His other notable works include "The Iron Cage: The Story of the Palestinian Struggle for Statehood," awarded the 2007 Arab American National Museum Book Award; "Resurrecting Empire: Western Footprints and America's Perilous Path in the Middle East;" "Palestinian Identity: The Construction of Modern National Consciousness," which won the Middle East Studies Association’s Albert Hourani Prize; "Under Siege: PLO Decision-making during the 1982 War;" and "British Policy towards Syria and Palestine, 1906-1914." He has written over seventy-five scholarly articles exploring varied aspects of Middle East history and politics.
Khalidi also contributed to the field as an advisor to the Palestinian delegation during the Madrid and Washington Arab-Israeli peace negotiations from October 1991 until June 1993. Moreover, he has shared his expertise on numerous radio and TV programs, including "All Things Considered," "Talk of the Nation," "Morning Edition," "The News Hour with Jim Lehrer," and "Nightline." His editorial roles include co-editing works such as "Palestine and the Gulf," "The Origins of Arab Nationalism," and "The Other Jerusalem: Rethinking the History of the Sacred City."
