Reid Wiseman

Gregory Reid Wiseman is an astronaut, engineer, and naval aviator. Commissioned through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program, Wiseman began his naval career in 1997 and completed flight training to become a Naval Aviator in 1999. He served with Fighter Squadron 31, deploying twice to the Middle East in support of Operations Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom. In 2004, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School and served as a test pilot and project officer at Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 23 (VX-23), contributing to various flight test programs, including those for the F-35C Lightning II and F/A-18 Hornet.

Selected by NASA in June 2009 as part of Astronaut Group 20, Wiseman completed his training in 2011. He embarked on his first spaceflight as a flight engineer for Expeditions 40 and 41 aboard the International Space Station (ISS), launching on May 28, 2014, and returning on November 10, 2014. During this 165-day mission, Wiseman and his crew conducted over 300 scientific experiments across various disciplines and set a record by completing 82 hours of research in a single week. He also performed two spacewalks, totaling 12 hours and 47 minutes.

Wiseman served as Deputy Chief of the Astronaut Office from June 2017 and was promoted to Chief on December 18, 2020. He stepped down from this position on November 14, 2022, to return to active flight status. On April 3, 2023, NASA announced Wiseman as the commander of the Artemis II mission, the first crewed lunar flyby since Apollo 17 in 1972, planned for 2026.

Wiseman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer and systems engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He later obtained a Master of Science in systems engineering from Johns Hopkins University.
