Rein Raud's theoretical work connects various disciplines of cultural analysis and criticism from textual and semiotic theory to anthropology and sociology, and is based on a very broad range of empirical research ranging from classical Japanese literature and Buddhist philosophy to theories of modernity and subjectivity as well as cultural politics and politics as culture.
In 2006-11, Raud served as the first rector (president) of the newly formed Tallinn University. He frequently publishes opinion pieces in the Estonian press.
Raud is also a prize-winning novelist, whose work has recently started to win critical acclaim also in English translations.
