Richard A. Muller

Richard A. Muller is the Professor of Physics Emeritus (U. California Berkeley) and the best-selling author of "Physics for Future Presidents," "Energy for Future Presidents," "Now—the Physics of Time," and 7 other books including graduate-level text on climate.

Muller is the Co-founder of Berkeley Earth, a non-profit that studies global warming and air pollution, and of Deep Isolation, a company that offers safe disposal of nuclear waste. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles in physic, astrophysics, geophysics, and climate. He has many awards including The Breakthrough Prize (for discovery of Dark Energy), The MacArthur Prize (work in cosmology), National Science Foundation Waterman Award (cosmic microwave anisotropy, radioisotope dating, and adaptive optics), Atlantic’s Brave Thinker Award and Poder’s Courage Award (work on global warming. His teaching awards include: Distinguished Teacher Award, Noyce Prize, Best Class on Campus, and U.C. Berkeley Unsung Hero Award.

Muller has conducted major research in diverse fields including: particle physics, paleo-climate, gravitational radiation, the origin of geomagnetic reversals, the origin of comets, lunar crating rates, fossil diversity, and evidence for Nemesis, a distant companion to the sun. He is the founder of two projects (cosmic microwaves, expansion of the universe) that were awarded Nobel Prizes (for his former students) and holds over 25 patents plus another dozen pending.

Muller has written 8 OpEds for the New York Times and Wall St. Journal and 29 monthly articles in MIT’s Technology Review on subjects including Climate Change, Energy Policy, and the origins of Covid-19. He is known as the “Coverted Skeptic” for his NYT OpEd on global warming. He served for 34 years as a Jason Advisor to the government on US National Security.

He has been married to Rosemary for 56 years, and he now works for his daughter Elizabeth who is the CEO of Deep Isolation.
