Richard Portes

Richard Portes is a distinguished economist celebrated for his global outlook and his penetrating analyses of the financial markets. He is known for his expertise in financial engineering and the exotic and — often toxic — derivatives invented by Wall Street.

    His writings on the lessons of the current crises and his prescriptions for international financial stability are eagerly anticipated at the many presentations he gives throughout Europe and the US.

Richard’s cutting-edge research on international finance, credit default swap markets, and European integration has influenced a generation of government officials, policy makers, and economists. He was one of the first economists to examine the international ramifications of the single European currency.

    Richard is the Founding Director of the Centre for Economic Policy Research, a network of 700 academic economists that publishes influential discussion papers and holds 70 to 80 conferences and workshops annually on the important economic issues of the day.

His work on financial derivatives currently focuses on the role of credit default swaps in the economic earthquakes shaking the world, and he has made compelling arguments for their regulation.

He writes and speaks on a broad range of international economic and finance topics, including world currencies, global financial regulation, global macroeconomic imbalances, the euro and European integration, and sovereign borrowing and debt. Richard is a regular presenter/contributor on CNBC's Squawk Box Europe.

During his distinguished career, Richard has taught at Princeton, Harvard, Berkeley, Columbia, and Oxford, among others.

He was decorated Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s New Year Honours List 2003.
