Robert Duvall began his acting career in 1955, after moving to New York and enrolling in the renowned Neighborhood Playhouse on the GI Bill. During this period, he shared an apartment with fellow aspiring actors Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman. Duvall's film debut was as "Boo Radley" in the 1963 classic "To Kill a Mockingbird." His other film credits in the 1960s included "Captain Newman, M.D.," "The Rain People," and "True Grit." He also played "Major Frank Burns" in "MAS*H."
Duvall has appeared in a number of notable films and received multiple Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor, including for his roles as "Tom Hagen" in "The Godfather" and the Custer-like "Kilgore" in "Apocalypse Now," who famously says, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning." His role as "Bull Meechum" in "The Great Santini" brought him another nomination in 1980. In 1983, he won his first Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of born-again country music star "Mac Sledge" in "Tender Mercies."
Duvall also starred in the miniseries "Lonesome Dove," which earned him an Emmy nomination. His other roles include appearances in "Newsies," the HBO original film "Stalin," and "The Apostle" (1996), which he directed and starred in, receiving an Academy Award nomination and six Independent Spirit Awards. Additionally, he was featured in "Lucky You" (2007), "We Own the Night" (2007), and "The Road" (2009). Duvall appeared in the Academy Award-winning "Crazy Heart" as well.
In 2015, at the age of 84, Duvall became the oldest person ever to be nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards, with his nomination for the film "The Judge." His ability to continue delivering powerful performances at his age is testament to his enduring talent and dedication to his craft.
