Robert Egger Biography
Robert Egger is president and founder of DC Central Kitchen & Campus Kitchens Project, an organization that collects food donated by local food-service businesses and farmers, and prepares 5,000 meals per day. This process is driven by formerly incarcerated or homeless men and women enrolled in DCCK’s internationally recognized job-training program. Since opening in 1989, DCCK has produced 23 million meals and helped 800 people get jobs. DCCK also operates its own catering business, as well as the Campus Kitchens Project, which coordinates similar recycling and meal programs in 30 college- and high school-based kitchens. Egger was the founding chair of both the Mayor’s Commission on Nutrition and Street Sense (DC’s “homeless” newspaper), and was the co-convener of the first Nonprofit Congress. His book on the nonprofit sector, Begging for Change, won the 2005 McAdams Prize. He has received many awards including being named the 2004 James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of the Year.
