Ruth Cohn

Ruth Cohn is a seasoned therapist who has dedicated her life to helping individuals and couples navigate the complexities of trauma, relationships, and sexuality. Beginning her career in the early 1980s, she was deeply influenced by the Women’s Liberation movement and its efforts to bring issues such as sexual violence to the forefront of public consciousness. This period of societal change shaped the trajectory of Ruth’s work, with a particular focus on trauma, a field that was just beginning to be recognized with the introduction of the PTSD diagnosis in 1980.

Over the years, Ruth developed a specialization in relationship dynamics, driven by her own struggles with relationships and a profound desire to understand this intricate area of human experience. As many of her clients sought therapy to address relationship difficulties, Ruth turned her attention to the often overlooked connection between trauma and relational issues. Her work expanded into neuroscience during the 1990s, as the "decade of the brain" illuminated the profound effects trauma has on the brain and nervous system. Ruth’s dedication to understanding and healing the trauma response led her to become a certified sex therapist, as she recognized the critical role that sexuality plays in healing trauma and fostering healthy relationships.

Throughout her 40-year career, Ruth has continuously expanded her therapeutic toolkit, integrating trauma-informed practices, neurofeedback, and Nexalin brain training to assist her clients. She works with individuals and couples alike, specializing in trauma, neglect, sexual difficulties, and relationship challenges. Ruth’s belief in the power of hope and personal growth is central to her work, and she brings this optimism into every session. In addition to her therapy practice, Ruth is a passionate writer, sharing her insights and knowledge with a wider audience. Outside of her professional life, Ruth enjoys cycling, baking sourdough bread, and making artisan cheese. She lives in San Francisco with her husband of 28 years and is deeply committed to helping others heal and grow through their struggles.
