Ryan Murphy

Ryan Murphy is a television writer, producer, and director. He began his career as a journalist before transitioning to television writing. His early success came with the teen drama "Popular," but it was his work on "Nip/Tuck," a series about plastic surgeons, that enhanced his reputation as a storyteller in Hollywood. Murphy's significant moment came with the creation of "Glee," a musical dramedy that resonated with a wide audience. The show, which celebrated diversity and tackled issues like sexuality, race, and acceptance, earned him his first Primetime Emmy Award. Following "Glee," Murphy continued to innovate with "American Horror Story," an anthology series that delved into dark and often taboo topics where he served as a co-creator and executive producer for the series.

In 2014, Murphy directed the television film adaptation of Larry Kramer's Broadway play "The Normal Heart." Murphy further expanded his work with "American Crime Story," a true crime anthology series that garnered critical acclaim, particularly for "The People v. O.J. Simpson" and "The Assassination of Gianni Versace," both of which earned multiple Emmy Awards. He also co-created and executive-produced "Pose," which featured the largest cast of transgender actors for a scripted network series. Murphy pledged to donate all his profits from the show to LGBT charitable organizations.

Continuing his work in the true crime genre, "Monster," a series on Netflix, premiered its first season titled "Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story" in September 2022, and its second season "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story" in Septemeber 2024. Murphy has also been involved in producing several ongoing projects, including "American Horror Story," "American Crime Story," "9-1-1," "9-1-1: Lone Star," "American Horror Stories," "The Watcher," "Grotesquerie," "American Sports Story," and "Doctor Odyssey."

One of Murphy's notable achievements is his record-breaking development deal with Netflix, signed in 2018. Under this deal, he has produced diverse content, including the film "The Prom" and upcoming series like "American Sports Story." He has also initiated discussions to produce a scripted adaptation of "Tiger King" starring Rob Lowe. Murphy's contributions to the industry have earned him numerous awards, including six Primetime Emmy Awards from 38 nominations, a Tony Award, and two Grammy Award nominations. In 2023, he received the Carol Burnett Award for TV Career Achievements.

Outside of his creative achievements, Murphy has worked towards promoting diversity and inclusion in Hollywood. Through his Half Initiative, he has increased representation both in front of and behind the camera, particularly for women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. He continues to collaborate frequently with actors such as Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, and Angela Bassett across various series.
