Salt-n-Pepa Biography
Salt-N-Pepa is an American hip-hop girl group. Formed in 1985, the band consists of Cheryl James (Salt), Sandra Denton (Pepa) and Deidra Roper (DJ Spinderella). Their single "Push It" hit #1 in three countries back in 1987.
The group won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. That award made them one of the first female rap acts to win a Grammy. Salt-N-Pepa holds the honorific title "First Ladies of Rap and Hip Hop".
The group took a break beginning in 2002 but reunited in 2005. After their reunion, Salt-N-Pepa starred in "The Salt-N-Pepa Show" on VH1, which ran from 2007 to 2008 for two seasons. The show chronicled events in the lives of Pepa and Salt as they work out past issues and return to the recording studio.
Salt-N-Pepa has sold over 15 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling rap acts of all time, male or female. In March 2019, it was announced that Salt-N-Pepa would have a biographical miniseries coming to the Lifetime network, highlighting the rise of the group to become one of the first successful female rap groups in hip-hop.
