Scott Rigsby

Scott Rigsby, a world record holder, marathon and Ironman triathlon champion, is notable for being the first double below-the-knee amputee to complete the grueling Hawaiian Ironman on prosthetics. Additionally, he is a sought-after professional speaker and bestselling author of the book "Do the Unthinkable".

"Doing the Unthinkable" is a motto Rigsby adopted when he set out in 2006 to change the world by breaking down barriers for physically challenged athletes. This journey not only impacted many physically challenged individuals but also influenced countless able-bodied people.

His path to making history included completing 13 triathlons and 5 road races in a single year, setting world records as a double below-the-knee amputee in the ING Georgia Full Marathon, Half Ironman, and International Distance Triathlon. These achievements earned him a spot on the 2006 USA Triathlon Team and fueled his ambition to challenge the limits further. On October 13, 2007, Rigsby endured the elements for nearly 17 hours to finish the Ironman distance triathlon at the 140.6-mile World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, becoming the first double amputee to do so on prosthetics.

Rigsby's life changed dramatically at age 18 when he was involved in a severe accident that led to the loss of his right leg and over 26 surgeries in the ensuing decade. Opting to remove his left leg as well, Rigsby overcame significant personal challenges, eventually committing to pursue opportunities to help others facing similar adversities.

Beyond his athletic pursuits, Rigsby has been recognized for his contributions and advocacy. He received accolades such as the Physically Challenged Athlete of the Year by Competitor Magazine and the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame "Star of the Year" Award. He also was honored as a Patient of Courage by the American Society of Plastics Surgeons and received recognition as World Vision’s Advocate for Children with Disabilities.

The Scott Rigsby Foundation, launched by Rigsby, furthers his commitment by supporting individuals with limb loss or mobility issues to lead active, fulfilling lives. Through this nonprofit, he partners wounded, ill, and injured veterans with civilians in events like the Ironman 70.3 Augusta, extending his impact.
