Scott Skiles Biography
He first made a name for himself when he led tiny Plymouth High School to the state championship in 1983. Plymouth, with no starter taller than 6-foot-2, was judged to be the weakest of the final four teams but upset Gary Roosevelt in two overtimes in the championship game. Skiles, a pudgy 6-1 guard, led the state in scoring as a senior (30.2) and capped it off with 39 in the championship game. His 22-footer at the buzzer forced the overtime, and he scored 25 of his 39 points after the third quarter.
Skiles wasn't voted Mr. Basketball, but he scored 25 points in the first game of the All-Star series with Kentucky to lead an Indiana victory.
Skiles went on to become one of the better guards in Big Ten history. He ranked second in the nation in scoring (27.4) as a senior while earning conference MVP honors, and led the underdog Spartans on an improbable ride to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.
A second-round draft pick of Milwaukee, Skiles also played for the Pacers before Orlando picked him up in the expansion draft. Skiles played five seasons for the Magic, earning the NBA's Most Improved Award in the 1990-91 season when he averaged 17.2 points per game. He set the league's single-game assists record with 30 against Denver in December, 1990.
Skiles is now the Head Coach of the Phoenix Suns.
