Seth Harris

Seth Harris, a former Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor and Deputy U.S. Secretary of Labor, served in President Obama’s Cabinet and played a pivotal role during his tenure from 2009 to 2014. As the Department of Labor's Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Officer, he managed an $85 billion annual budget and transformed the agency by eliminating inefficiencies. His leadership led to the adoption of data-driven, evidence-based management, making the Department the federal government’s best-performing department. Recognized for his innovative strategies, Harris is often associated with the term “Moneyball for Government,” highlighting his approach to using data-driven strategies to enhance performance.

Currently, Harris is a Distinguished Professor of Practice at Northeastern University, where he is also an Affiliated Faculty and a Senior Fellow at the Burnes Center for Social Change. He maintains his connection with academia as a Distinguished Scholar at Cornell University’s School of Industrial & Labor Relations and teaches at Cornell University’s Institute for Public Affairs.
