Shirley Raines

Dr. Shirley Raines is a respected speaker, consultant, and education professional with extensive expertise in early childhood education and leadership development. She addresses diverse audiences at conferences, foundations, boards, and professional and community organizations, focusing primarily on leadership in real-world work environments. Raines shares her insights with a blend of humor and authority.

Raines’ illustrious career in educational leadership includes serving as the first female President of the University of Memphis from July 1, 2001, until her retirement on June 30, 2013. During her tenure, she was instrumental in the acquisition of Lambuth University, the establishment of the University of Memphis Research Foundation and the Memphis Research Consortium, and the construction of new facilities. Before her presidency, she held various teaching and administrative roles at universities across the United States and served as the dean of education at the University of Kentucky. Raines is now President Emeritus of the University of Memphis.

In addition to her leadership roles, Raines has authored several books including "From Pink Purse to Briefcase," which details her journey from a preschool teacher to a university president, and offers leadership stories and guidance. She has been inducted into the Tennessee Women’s Hall of Fame and remains active as a motivational speaker and leadership consultant based in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Raines has also presented at prestigious institutions and events, such as the Harvard Institute for New Presidents and Chancellors and various commencement addresses. Her seminars and training sessions, including those on "Communications while Living Life in the Public Eye" and "Leadership Lessons from Some Unlikely Sources," continue to inspire and educate leaders across various sectors.
