Stan Wawrinka Biography
Stan Wawrinka is a Swiss professional tennis player, achieving a career-high Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) singles ranking of world No. 3 in January 2014. His career highlights include three Grand Slam titles: the 2014 Australian Open, the 2015 French Open and the 2016 US Open, where he defeated the No. 1 player in the finals on all three occasions. Other achievements include reaching the final of the 2017 French Open, winning the prestigious Masters 1000 title at Monte Carlo in 2014, and reaching three other finals at 2008 Rome, 2013 Madrid and 2017 Indian Wells.
Wawrinka turned professional in 2002, steadily rising through the ranks, earning a reputation for his tenacity, one-handed backhand and strong baseline play. Finding success later in his career, Wawrinka has won a total of 16 ATP singles titles and was a formidable opponent to tennis' Big Three: fellow Swiss player Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, the latter two whom he defeated for his Grand Slam victories. Wawrinka also won a gold medal in doubles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics partnering with Federer, and was pivotal in the Swiss team's victory at the 2014 Davis Cup.
